ENOLA HOLMES, ON THE ROCKS, and A CALL TO SPY on Episode #325

Millie Bobby Brown looks shocked after releasing an arrow from her bow in the movie Enola Holmes

This week we ponder what to do in case of a pants emergency before the movies. Evan kicks things off with A CALL TO SPY (2:42), which is a true story about women who spied on the Nazis during WWII. Next, everyone discusses the Netflix movie ENOLA HOLMES (13:09), the Millie Bobby Brown vehicle where she plays Sherlock Holmes’s talented and charming teenage sister. The main event is Sofia Coppola’s ON THE ROCKS (28:51), about a daughter (Rashida Jones) and father (Bill Murray) who reconnect in NYC. In this week’s Patreon bonus audio, we cover the winner of our September poll, the 1967 film TO SIR, WITH LOVE.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT, FOOLS RUSH IN, NOTTING HILL, SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE, and BEAUTIFUL GIRLS on Episode #211

Henry Cavill, Tom Cruise, and Rebecca Ferguson looking exhausted, recover from a bathroom fight scene in MISSION: Impossible - Fallout.

Henry Cavill, Tom Cruise, and Rebecca Ferguson after one helluvah bathroom fight scene in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT

This week, Dave kicks things off with a palate cleansing Riedel’s Recaps after last week’s weedfest: the overlong yet charming NOTTING HILL (6:57), the award-winning sex, lies, and videotape (12:29), and the par creepy, part interesting, thoroughly ’90s BEAUTIFUL GIRLS (13:32). Next, Evan revisits romantic comedy, FOOLS RUSH IN (20:55) starring the then-newly famous Salma Hayek and Matthew Perry, which boasts some unexpected layers in its treatment of race, culture, and romantic independence. Then it’s on to the main event, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (26:05). Full of terrific action but weighed down by twist after twist after twist, it’s still well worth your time.

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, and KUNG FURY on Episode #89

Batman v Superman

Ben Affleck’s concerned expression in BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE is the same one we had while we watching the movie.

Dave couldn’t make it at the last minute, so frequent guest Charlie Nash steps in to help out this week. After the guys discuss an idea Kris has for a movie, that he definitely shouldn’t be the one to write, they delve into the zany short film KUNG FURY. Charlie hasn’t seen it, so Kris and Evan convince him to check it out by spoilerpiecing how its hero acquires his kung fu powers. Then it’s up to Evan to describe MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2, or as he calls it, MY BIG FAT SEQUEL. He’s annoyed by how hypocritical it is, which leads to a tangent about another hypocritical movie: I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY. Once he finishes sharing all the reasons why MBFGW2 wasn’t good, all three guys tear into BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. Charlie describes how it looks like shit (dark, murky, and brown) and explains why Batman and Superman are wrong in their worldviews. Evan craps on it too for its poor direction and editing. Kris is no fan either, but he provides interesting context for the movie in relation to comic book storylines and describes the few things he did actually like about it.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., PHOENIX, and STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON on Episode #57

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer on a scooter in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer during one of the best scenes in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Dave is back again on this week’s Spoilerpiece (which makes two weeks in a row)! The fellas talk about silly t-shirts they wish they could own, including one in particular that Kris wanted as a kid. Then the guys take on a bumper crop of movies. Kris and Evan are up first with their thoughts on Guy Ritchie’s hyper-styled adaptation of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., which has a great performance by Armie Hammer and one of the worst car chases Kris has ever seen. Dave delivers praise for PHOENIX, while wondering what the plural of the word is (phoenices?). Once he’s done talking up the film’s perfectly composed photography, interesting post-World War II story, and its Hitchcock-ian flavor, Evan and Kris round things out with STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. Both of them discuss why they love the movie (because fuck the po-lice) and how its casting is fantastic.
