Hello there! On this week’s episode, Evan and Dave run us through quintessential early ’90s psycho stalker flick PACIFIC HEIGHTS (5:04) that lets Keaton be Keaton. Next up, Dave unleashes his disdain for the pointless and needlessly infuriating THE LEISURE SEEKER (17:19), which thankfully no one is going to see anyway. Then it’s on to Kris, who watched two films nominated for Best Animated Feature, THE BOSS BABY (24:41) and LOVING VINCENT (30:48). He hated one and tolerated the other. Guess which is which — then flip that guess, and that’s the correct answer. Last up is the main event, GAME NIGHT (33:55), which has massively undersold just how funny and exciting it is through awful, horrendous trailers. It’s the rarest of all movies: an action-thriller-comedy where all three components work!
Peter Parker doesn’t have good luck with cellphones or backpacks in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING
This week the guys discuss their favorite Beach Boys song before they talk movies. They only have one big film to talk about, so they spend some time catching up on others they caught recently. In a segment of “Evan Can Wait” aka “Crewind,” Evan shares his experiences watching CADDYSHACK (6:08) and OUTSIDE PROVIDENCE (14:01) again, as well as his first-time viewing of the romantic OUTSOURCED (20:00). Then Dave recaps his latest time through A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (26:29), where he talks about what it has in common with other Sergio Leone Westerns and samurai films. Lastly, the guys all team up to review SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING (33:40), a Marvel superhero outing that they all really enjoy with believable teenagers facing believable troubles.
This week the guys give you the lowdown on their recording equipment, before Kris shares why the atrocious GODS OF EGYPT left him feeling rattled. Part of it has to do with its 120 minutes of confusing plot and Gerard Butler’s mysterious decision to use his Scottish accent. The whole experience left Kris too depressed to chide a fellow theatergoer for using his phone during the picture, so he decides to pass the mic. Next Dave and Evan review TRIPLE 9, a movie that with lots of good killin’ and great action. Kate Winslet does a terrible Russian accent, the film is overstuffed with plot, and goes along too long, but Woody Harrelson is amazing, even if he could play his role in his sleep. Finally, the guys fulfill their promise from last episode of revisiting Tim Burton’s BATMAN. Dave and Evan go over the massive plot holes, continuity errors, and other various things that bother them from their most recent viewing, although they do take some time to talk about what they still love about the movie in spite of those shortcomings.
This week we talk about Keanu Reeves’ old-guy-kicking-ass movie JOHN WICK, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s BIRDMAN, and the very French THE BLUE ROOM. Tangents this week include why trailers suck, the French as a people, the Byronic hero, and lots of other stuff. Plus, Dave sings “Two Heads Are Better Than One” for a half-chorus (it’s Evan’s fault), and Kris explains how John Wick (the character) comes to violence (short version: The bad guys came at him on the WRONG day).
