TRIPLE 9, GODS OF EGYPT, and Tim Burton’s BATMAN on Episode #85

Triple 9

They’ve got red on them in TRIPLE 9.

This week the guys give you the lowdown on their recording equipment, before Kris shares why the atrocious GODS OF EGYPT left him feeling rattled. Part of it has to do with its 120 minutes of confusing plot and Gerard Butler’s mysterious decision to use his Scottish accent. The whole experience left Kris too depressed to chide a fellow theatergoer for using his phone during the picture, so he decides to pass the mic. Next Dave and Evan review TRIPLE 9, a movie that with lots of good killin’ and great action. Kate Winslet does a terrible Russian accent, the film is overstuffed with plot, and goes along too long, but Woody Harrelson is amazing, even if he could play his role in his sleep. Finally, the guys fulfill their promise from last episode of revisiting Tim Burton’s BATMAN. Dave and Evan go over the massive plot holes, continuity errors, and other various things that bother them from their most recent viewing, although they do take some time to talk about what they still love about the movie in spite of those shortcomings.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – Part 2, THE NIGHT BEFORE, and TRUMBO on Episode #71

Seth Rogen and Jillian Bell in THE NIGHT BEFORE

Nothing like tripping balls in church. Take it from Seth Rogen in THE NIGHT BEFORE.

Somehow, saucy puppet shows and Clippy from MS Word are topics of discussion heading into this week’s episode. Evan and Kris lead things off by talking about THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – PART 2, which neither of them is particularly enthused about or invested in. As people who aren’t really into the series, they can admit that it’s good for what it is, and that fans will probably enjoy it as a conclusion to the franchise. Then Dave and Kris talk TRUMBO, which Dave claims is a sequel to DUMBO. This HBO movie looks and feels like it belongs on TV. It’s too long and fairly one note, although it does have some good things going on. Lastly, Evan spoilerpieces THE NIGHT BEFORE, a Christmas comedy starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie as childhood friends looking for one last epic holiday blowout. Its dramatic elements don’t work and JGL isnt’ believable as the group’s loser, but it does make use of great comedians in small roles. Michael Shannon is its surprise MVP.

HOT PURSUIT, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, and PLAYING IT COOL on Episode #43

Sophia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon covered in

Sophia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon covered in “flour” aka cocaine in HOT PURSUIT

This week Kris starts off by recommending a title for Dave’s autobiography. Dave gets a good laugh out of that before explaining why he doesn’t watch bad ’80s John Travolta movies (except URBAN COWBOY) and why Debra Winger is one of his least favorite onscreen presences. After that he talks about how HOT PURSUIT tries to subvert buddy comedy cliches and fails. In the process, Kris describes how he got accidentally hooked on THE NEW GIRL. Then he and Evan talk about the layers and complexity in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD that make it such an enjoyable film. Finally, Dave wraps things up with his take on PLAYING IT COOL, a romantic comedy which has some decent moments, but mostly gets demerits from him for “being dumb as shit.”
