Evan is off this week so Megan and Dave are a duo, and they’re a doozy of a duo, because one movie they like, and one movie they really, really don’t. They start things off with NELLY & NADINE (3:26), a documentary about an unlikely love story of two women falling in love on Christmas Eve, 1944, in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Then it’s THE APOLOGY (27:47), a Christmas-set thriller about a missing child, her coming-to-terms-with-it mother, and the unannounced guest who shows up to pour sugar in everyone’s figurative gas tanks. Bonus: Janeane Garofalo is in this one (along with stars Anna Gunn and Linus Roache)! Don’t forget to check out this week’s Patreon exclusive audio, where Megan and Dave talk about the holiday rom-com LAST HOLIDAY starring Queen Latifah.
Dave is on vacation, so Charlie Nash joins Evan and Kris to discuss Ed Sheeran’s distracting GAME OF THRONES cameo before they dig into this week’s movies. Before they get into any new ones, Kris shares his most recent experience with ALTERED STATES (4:25), and his invigorating trip to a sensory deprivation chamber that inspired his viewing. Then Charlie and Evan cover GIRLS TRIP (14:23), a comedy that’s way funnier and raunchier than they expected, with many scene-stealing moments by Tiffany Haddish. After that, Kris and Charlie attempt to review VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (28:26), a colorful Luc Besson sci-fi film that’s bloated, convoluted, and predictable despite its endearing silliness. Finally, all of them tackle Christopher Nolan’s DUNKIRK (48:55), a World War II film that blew them away with its massive scale, pulse-pounding score, and breakneck pacing.
Megan Kearns from Bitch Flicks joins Kris and Evan on this week’s episode to lament HANNIBAL’s cancellation by NBC before Evan shares a story about Mads Mikkelsen using his creeping powers for good. Then Kris and Megan give him the lowdown on TED 2, which Kris says is filled with “uncomfortable sincerity, along with a lot of failed jokes.” After that Evan and Megan talk about how much they enjoyed Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique’s performances in the HBO biopic BESSIE. Kris follows up with a brief interlude about foam penises and failed orgies in THE OVERNIGHT. Finally, Megan brings everything together with Kate Winslet’s A LITTLE CHAOS, which she appreciates for showing more than telling.
