BIRD BOX, THE FAVOURITE, and IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK on Episode #234

Happy New Year Spoilerpiece fans! This week the guys start out by revealing their unconventional New Year’s Eve plans. For films, there are three on the docket, and everyone has seen them, which makes for lively discussion! First, the guys review THE FAVOURITE (4:48), a period piece by Yorgos Lanthimos that Kris and Dave loved, but Evan couldn’t stand. Next they cover IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (17:37), the beautiful Barry Jenkins movie they all agree is fantastic because the theme of love permeates it. Lastly, the guys take on the much-discussed Sandra Bullock Netflix original BIRD BOX (30:17), a tense horror flick with good performances that is stunted by numerous flaws. OCEAN’S 8, TOTAL RECALL, HEAT, and (not) HEREDITARY on Episode #204

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Sarah Paulson sit on opposite sit on opposite sides of a New York subway car looking badass in Ocean's 8.

It may follow franchise conventions a little too closely, but OCEAN’S 8 is still a lot of fun.

This week, Kris teases with some tasty tidbits about HEREDITARY (2:58) that don’t give anything away, tabling that conversation for when all of the hosts have seen it. (Do see it yourself before then, though!) Then, Evan and Dave revisit old favorites: TOTAL RECALL (7:15) and HEAT (18:14) respectively, delivering some choice observations that come from repeat viewings. Was it all a dream in TOTAL RECALL? What exactly is this “cowboy” business all about in HEAT? Listen to find out! Then it’s on to the main event: OCEAN’S 8 (29:45), a totally fun heist flick full of terrific stars doing what they do best. Though technically a sequel to the OCEAN’S movies of yesterdecade, it charts its own path and will charm its way into your good graces thanks to its dedicated cast and solid screenplay. Could it have benefitted from Soderbergh’s direction? Maybe! Is it a blast anyway? Hell yeah!

BURNT, OUR BRAND IS CRISIS, and HIDING OUT on Episode #68

Bradley Cooper’s character is a total dick in BURNT

Following a brief Eddy mix up, the guys review movies new to old. First up is Evan with BURNT, a Bradley Cooper film about disgraced chef who does not pee in soup. It’s a super predictable picture where there are gratuitous montages that focus on mundane things and everyone is waiting around for him to get better. Kris is next to discuss OUR BRAND IS CRISIS, a political film that’s reminiscent of PCU, but without George Clinton to bring everyone together. The director doesn’t belong and it’s so uneven, although when it’s cynical it does have points to make. Finally, Evan has seen Dave’s favorite movie, HIDING OUT, starring John Cryer, so the two of them give it the full spoilerpiece treatment. Dave can “quote the motherfucker backwards and forwards,” and Evan reveals his surprise about how part of it takes place in Boston, while pausing to analyze its 80s yuppie mentality.
