OCEAN’S 8, TOTAL RECALL, HEAT, and (not) HEREDITARY on Episode #204

Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Sarah Paulson sit on opposite sit on opposite sides of a New York subway car looking badass in Ocean's 8.

It may follow franchise conventions a little too closely, but OCEAN’S 8 is still a lot of fun.

This week, Kris teases with some tasty tidbits about HEREDITARY (2:58) that don’t give anything away, tabling that conversation for when all of the hosts have seen it. (Do see it yourself before then, though!) Then, Evan and Dave revisit old favorites: TOTAL RECALL (7:15) and HEAT (18:14) respectively, delivering some choice observations that come from repeat viewings. Was it all a dream in TOTAL RECALL? What exactly is this “cowboy” business all about in HEAT? Listen to find out! Then it’s on to the main event: OCEAN’S 8 (29:45), a totally fun heist flick full of terrific stars doing what they do best. Though technically a sequel to the OCEAN’S movies of yesterdecade, it charts its own path and will charm its way into your good graces thanks to its dedicated cast and solid screenplay. Could it have benefitted from Soderbergh’s direction? Maybe! Is it a blast anyway? Hell yeah!

BOSCH, COLOSSAL, 13 REASONS WHY, and THE GOLDEN GIRLS on Episode #146

Hi everyone! This week there were some major releases, but none of them screened for critics? Like, for real. So none of saw THE CIRCLE or HOW TO BE A LATIN LOVER, and honestly, we’re probably all better off. But we didn’t just sit around with our thumbs up our wazoos. Dave watched all 10 episodes of the Amazon series BOSCH (5:45), Kris saw the new Anne Hathaway/Jason Sudeikis movie COLOSSAL (26:45), and Evan saw most of the Netflix series 13 REASONS WHY (51:30). At 17:49, Kris and Dave go off on a major GOLDEN GIRLS tangent. And words of warning: We had some serious audio problems while recording this episode and you’ll hear some white noise fading in and out of the background starting at about the 35:00 mark (I didn’t write down the exact spot, so that’s a guess). We’re working on getting new recording equipment, so hopefully these audio glitches will soon be a thing of that past, yo. Peace!

GOLD, 2017 Oscar Nominations, and Dede Crimmins on Episode #133

Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez in GOLD

Matthew McConaughey and Edgar Ramirez bromancing in GOLD

Listen:

Baby Henry is under the weather, prompting Dave to quarantine himself – so guest Dede Crimmins joins Evan and Kris this week to talk about the ‘90s and lots of film-related topics. Dede fills the guys in on her latest adventures, which include recording a DVD commentary, and participating on panels at the Arisia science fiction convention. Following some philosophical discussion about horror, Dede shares three movies to look out for this year (at 13:00): RAW, THE BAD BATCH, and COLOSSAL. After that, she and the guys discuss the 2017 Oscar nominations (at 21:52), revealing surprises and disappointments in the major categories. Finally, all three of them review this week’s new release GOLD (at 33:50), the Matthew McConaughey gold prospecting movie that Kris describes as AMERICAN HUSTLE on NyQuil. Evan and Dede find it charming for McConaughey’s spirited performance as a balding, overweight, drunk, but they admit that they’ll probably forget it in a week.

Episode #63: BLIND, THE INTERN, THE SECOND MOTHER, SICARIO, and STONEWALL

People in Stonewall the movie

Roland Emmerich’s STONEWALL throws bricks at historical accuracy.

Dave makes a historic Spoilerpiece proclamation! But first Evan and Kris tease their coverage of THE MARTIAN by telling Dave about the book. It’s a busy day on the show with lots of ground to cover. Kris starts off by sharing what fucking disaster Roland Emmerich’s STONEWALL is and how it insultingly makes up facts. Then Dave gives his first positive review of the week in describing Regina Casé’s beautiful performance in THE SECOND MOTHER. Evan’s up next to spoilerpiece Dave and Kris into wanting to see Denis Villeneuve’s suspenseful film SICARIO. Dave jumps in after that with a (gasp) second positive review to describe the good mind fuckery of BLIND and finally, Evan talks about why he thinks De Niro’s performance in THE INTERN might be his best of the millennium.

Episode #17: INTERSTELLAR, BIG HERO 6, and (whoops) MORE HORROR

interstellar_a

We cover a lot of ground this week. Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR! BIG HERO 6! And Evan brings up that last week we forgot to talk about GHOULIES (which screened at the Halloween horror overnighter that our guest Deirdre Crimmins and Dave talked about). Plus, we talk about Robert Zemeckis and his crappy motion capture movies; Eddie Money songs; Evan cracks himself up; Kris mentions that he does research; and Dave tries to remember the theme song to the Saturday morning cartoon DROIDS.
