NON-FICTION, BRIGHTBURN, MEETING GORBACHEV, and GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS with special guest “MovieBob” Chipman on Episode #255

On this week’s episode, Dave and Kris are joined by our friend, colleague, and returning guest Bob “MovieBob” Chipman! Kicking things off, Dave recaps Olivier Assayas’s new film, NON-FICTION (4:10), which if nothing else, is certainly French. Then Bob fills us in on BRIGHTBURN (14:46), the alternate take on superhero origin stories that imagines a Clark Kent-like character as a sociopath and killer. It’s essentially a B movie with a big budget and star power, but is interesting enough to seek out. Next up is Kris with Werner Herzog’s MEETING GORBACHEV (23:07), which is exactly what it sounds like, and is exactly why you should go see it. Closing out this episode is Bob and Kris barely containing their excitement for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (39:41), a drastic improvement on its predecessor that impresses in several ways — visuals, sound, just the right amount of lore, and putting the focus back on the monsters themselves.

Kris is on a tight deadline and can’t make it this week, so Movie Bob Chipman joins Evan and Dave to discuss logistical questions about day to day operations of the Death Star. Bob shares insights into one of his upcoming videos before being their guest, i.e. reviewing BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (at 6:08). After some tangents about PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and other live action Disney adaptations, Bob describes why BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a tribute to itself; a fine, blow by blow remake of the animated movie. Next, all three of them discuss the Oscar-winning documentary O.J.: MADE IN AMERICA (at 22:24), by revealing how it provides deep context into O.J.’s successful athletic career and his abusive past, which leads the guys to ruminate on other celebrities with abusive histories. Finally, Evan and Dave tackle PERSONAL SHOPPER (at 42:26), an Olivier Assayas/Kristen Stewart film that’s oozing with esoteric weirdness and needlessly confusing plot points. Fear not, the show isn’t entirely without Kris! Stay tuned after the closing credits for a brief message from him.

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE, HIGH-RISE, LOUDER THAN BOMBS, and A BIGGER SPLASH on Episode #96

Dave has some stern words for Mother Nature on this week’s show, which features returning guest Bob Chipman. Bob leads off with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE or as Dave calls it, “X-MEN: APOCALYPTO.”  In the process, he discusses how Bryan Singer can’t direct an action scene to save his life and how everything good from the last X-MEN movie happens twice in this one so it’s no longer surprising. Next, Bob and Evan discuss Ben Wheatley’s HIGH-RISE, a dystopian concept film where “everything goes to shit” in completely unsubtle ways. Following their review, Dave delivers his commentary on LOUDER THAN BOMBS, a very male movie about the death of a woman that he describes as a Norman Rockwell piece, if Rockwell dropped acid and got mugged. Finally, Evan covers A BIGGER SPLASH, which is more than just a film about yuppies who hang around a pool. He spoilerpieces Bob and Dave into wanting to see the movie by revealing its sharp humor, its complicated drama, and its unanswered mysteries.

THE MARTIAN, THE WALK, and TIME OUT OF MIND on Episode #64

Bob Chipman aka The Movie Bob fills in for Dave, who is unfortunately absent due to dental work this week. Bob reminisces with Evan and Kris about movies named after job titles before jumping into conversation about THE MARTIAN. All three of them saw it, and all three agree it’s a great film. Evan’s a bit disappointed by some aspects of the book that were cut, but Kris loves that it lets scientists be scientists and Bob hopes that it inspires a million kids to go to space camp. Then Bob and Evan discuss THE WALK, a film that features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a cartoonish Frenchman. Both thought they might hate it, so they were pleasantly surprised by how much they dug its playful nature. And last but not least, Evan briefly reviews Oren Moverman’s TIME OUT OF MIND, which makes a great statement about homelessness, even though nothing really happens in it.

JURASSIC WORLD: Starring Chris Pratt as “Velociraptor Dundee”

The one and only Bob Chipman aka “Movie Bob” joins Evan and Kris for this week’s episode about JURASSIC WORLD and THE CONNECTION. First up is a game of “Get to Know Your Guest Host,” where Bob shares how he got into reviewing movies. After that Bob and Kris spoilerpiece Jurassic World, a film that Bob enjoyed despite its silliness. Just how silly is it? Well, there are weaponized dinosaurs and Chris Pratt basically plays “Velociraptor Dundee.” After Bob and Kris get all the spoiling out of their systems, Evan fills them in on THE CONNECTION, a movie which feels like the French version of Michael Mann’s HEAT. Chekhov’s Gun discussions and Indiana Jones references are in ample supply, as are tangents about BLOWN AWAY and THE GODFATHER.
