This week we discuss the results of the presidential election before the movies. We start with the 2020 Boston Jewish Film Festival at (7:32). Evan talks about the shorts, features (THOU SHALT NOT HATE), and documentaries (THEY AIN’T READY FOR ME and SYNDROME K) he saw solo, before he and Megan dig into movies they’ve both seen: queer coming-of-age comedy TAHARA (18:01), romantic drama THE END OF LOVE (25:10), and queer comedy SHIVA BABY (36:44). Then, Megan and Dave discuss COME AWAY (43:48), a fantasy film starring Angelina Jolie and David Oyelowo as the parents to Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. Finally, Evan and Megan wrap up with HIS HOUSE (53:07), a Netflix haunted house horror film about a married couple who are refugees from South Sudan. On this week’s Patreon bonus audio, we discuss a Patron’s choice: the 2014 German horror film DER SAMURAI.

QUEEN OF KATWE hits all the right notes as a fun, inspirational Disney sports movie.
This week the guys get in on the game of using three fictional characters to describe themselves. Then Evan and Kris talk about the 70mm and Widescreen Festival at the Somerville Theatre (at 7:04), where they TRON and SLEEPING BEAUTY. While discussing how beautiful these films look, they each share new elements that they discovered by watching them on the big screen. After that, Dave provides a “Riedel’s Recap” of GREEN ROOM (at 15:56), which offers specific comparisons to Jeremy Saulnier’s previous movie BLUE RUIN. Next, Kris delivers a “Keeping up with the Jensons” about DEMON (at 21:32), where he offers a very different take on the picture than Evan. Dave transitions into THE BEATLES: EIGHT DAYS A WEEK – THE TOURING YEARS (at 29:57), a Ron Howard documentary that attempts to whitewash tensions between the band’s members. Finally, Kris and Evan close out with QUEEN OF KATWE (at 39:10), a Disney sports movie about chess, which is carried by good humor and cute kids learning about life.

Joaquin Phoenix in “Inherent Vice”
We promised it in last week’s episode and we didn’t deliver, so this week we finally get to the worst movies of 2014. Since we like to save the worst for last, we talk about two new movies we saw first: INHERENT VICE and SELMA. Tangents this week include veganism, pyschadelic drugs, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and THE LONG GOODBYE among other things. The episode is a little longer than usual, but that’s mostly because we were having so much fun talking about farts. That and Evan almost fell asleep editing the episode. We promise it will be shorter next time.
