THE VISIT, GRANDMA, and 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN on Episode #61

Sean Burns joins Evan and Kris this week, vowing to up the episode’s profanity quotient since he’s filling for Dave. But Evan does a pretty good job of that himself, cursing out M. Night Shyamalan’s found footage horror film THE VISIT. Although Evan can’t stand the movie, Kris doesn’t actually hate everything about it and manages to sell Sean on seeing it. After they get through that slog, Sean talks about how entertaining Lily Tomlin is in GRANDMA and how crazy it was seeing her around Sundance with Jane Fonda. Then he wraps everything up with 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN, the boring Christian film that stars Hayden Christensen with a creepy mustache and drawl. How boring is it? Sean needed three tries to get through it without falling asleep. Given its lack of excitement, it’s not surprising that the guys end up hitting a number of tangents instead of discussing the movie in depth.

This week the Spoilerpiece Hotline receives a call from Dave?! He has a special message for our listeners, so please excuse the audio quality. Then guest Dede Crimmins joins Evan and Kris to talk about the MAD MEN series finale, the state of horror movies in 2015, and the Brad Bird film TOMORROWLAND starring George Clooney. If you don’t want MAD MEN spoilers, fast forward to 13:20, where you’ll hear Dede tell the guys about 2015’s hits and misses in horror. You can also learn the plural of Duplass and why THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE is “the most tasteful ass to mouth you can find in the theatre.” While talking about horror, the gang swaps stories about movies that scared each of them growing up and Dede shares how she got into writing about horror. Everything gets wrapped up with discussion about TOMORROWLAND, which everyone thought was an overbearing pessimistic film with delusions of Randian and Orwellian grandeur.

The STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer, UNFRIENDED (HORROR!), and TRUE STORY on Episode #40

It’s a tangent kinda night at Spoilerpiece! We open with a lengthy discussion of the new STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer. Evan and Kris are on board. Dave has doubts (to say the least). Kris points out that Evan and Dave are the kinds of guys who would sit in the back of the classroom, pass notes, and crack jokes. There’s a lot of singing in this episode, and then the guys get to TRUE STORY, the not-great movie starring Jonah Hill and James Franco. Finally, it’s onto HORROR! Kris and Dave saw UNFRIENDED, and it’s way more fun than it should be.

RUN ALL NIGHT, CINDERELLA, and IT FOLLOWS (HORROR) on Episode #35

This week’s bullshit segment is brought to you by: horse shit. We all wonder how the special effects guys in BACK TO THE FUTURE III made the manure look so real, and then Dave points out something that Kris never noticed in the first film. Kris is under the weather, but he soldiers through as we discuss RUN ALL NIGHT, CINDERELLA, and IT FOLLOWS. Dave heaps some hate on RUN ALL NIGHT and other Liam Neeson films that piss him off. He mixes up who is Danny and who is Mike in the movie, but it doesn’t matter. All he knows is that one looks like a low rent, Ryan Gosling. Kris gets inspired to start a fairy tale metal band before he and Dave talk about how surprised they are by all the praise CINDERELLA is getting. Their description of it reminds Evan of a SIMPSONS reference. Finally, Evan and Kris talk about how creeped out they were while watching the horror flick IT FOLLOWS. Neither of them scare easily, so you know it has to be good.

Evan couldn’t make the recording so Kris and Dave are joined by friend and fellow critic Deirdre Crimmins (check out her work on allthingshorror.com!). This week we yap a ton about horror movies (because this episode premieres on Halloween), and we also get into the excellent Jake Gyllenhaal flick NIGHTCRAWLER and Alexandre Aja’s HORNS. The horror movies we touch on include FRANKENSTEIN (1931), THE LOST BOYS, EVIL DEAD II, EATEN ALIVE, GHOULIES (which we forgot to mention), and THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, which is easily one of the worst movies to ever grace the silver screen.

After a weekend of horror, two tweets explain it all

Two-thirds of the Spoilerpiece Theatre podcast attended the 12-hour horror movie marathon at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass., over the weekend. The movies, in the order shown, were:

1. Frankenstein (1931);

2. The Lost Boys;

3. Evil Dead II;

4. Eaten Alive (shown under the title “Starlight Slaughter,” and one of the worst movies we’ve ever seen);

5. Ghoulies;

6: The Incredible Melting Man (in which a man melts for 84 minutes, and his name, “Steve,” is uttered approximately 450 times);

7. The Wicker Man.

It was a great time, and our good friend and fellow film critic Sam Cohen tweeted the following afterward:

ANNABELLE and THE TRIP TO ITALY on Episode #12

Evan is back and we’re thrilled, but this week Kris couldn’t make it to the studio. (“The Studio” is Dave’s living room, btw.) But it’s October and that means IT’S TIME FOR HORROR! Lucky us, there’s ANNABELLE to yap about, and Dave makes no bones about some of the movie’s dumb tricks and dumber plot points. Plus, Evan and Dave have a quick chat about THE TRIP TO ITALY, the Steve Coogan/Rob Brydon flick (and the sequel to THE TRIP). And who is that at the start of the episode? Is that Dr. Emmett Brown? Why, yes! We think it is!
