THE REVENANT, THE FOREST, and DRINKING BUDDIES on Episode #78

The Revenant

Some of the crazy eye and mouth acting done by DiCaprio in THE REVENANT.

The guys are back in full force this week to discuss the finer points of linguistics before they review THE REVENANT. Dave considers it his holy grail because it has everything he could hope for: it’s long, quiet, not a lot happens, and there’s some good killing. Kris and Evan enjoy it as well for its technical prowess, although they never felt plugged into its story. After a CROCODILE DUNDEE II reference, Kris transitions to talking about THE FOREST, a terrible horror film that he describes in such vivid detail that he accidentally sells Dave and Evan on seeing it. Then all three delve into another one of Dave’s favorite movies: DRINKING BUDDIES. They explore its complicated relationship dynamics and talk more about Joe Swanberg as a filmmaker. Expect to hear a little more about DIGGING FOR FIRE. You’ve been warned.

THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – Part 1 and CALVARY on Episode #19

hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1

Can you say marketing ploy? That’s right! It’s our yap-fest about THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1, a movie we can’t stop discussing even though we try to many times. Then we talk about CALVARY and wonder why Brendan Gleeson isn’t a star. But perhaps most strangely, Evan lets Dave stroll through his Tinder account while Kris seems aghast.

THE JUDGE AND GONE GIRL on Episode #13

The Judge 1

It’s time to talk Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall and THE JUDGE, and so much of the movie works but even more of it doesn’t. How many subplots can one film have? Well, how often can we break off into tangents (covering Van Halen, David Fincher’s body of work, how watching THE BIG LEBOWSKI is kind of like watching THE JUDGE except better, and the pros of having Evan AND Kris on this week’s episode) when discussing GONE GIRL? HOW MANY, WE ASK YOU? And somehow ANNABELLE snuck in for a moment this week, but that’s what evil dolls do.

ANNABELLE and THE TRIP TO ITALY on Episode #12

ANNABELLE

Evan is back and we’re thrilled, but this week Kris couldn’t make it to the studio. (“The Studio” is Dave’s living room, btw.) But it’s October and that means IT’S TIME FOR HORROR! Lucky us, there’s ANNABELLE to yap about, and Dave makes no bones about some of the movie’s dumb tricks and dumber plot points. Plus, Evan and Dave have a quick chat about THE TRIP TO ITALY, the Steve Coogan/Rob Brydon flick (and the sequel to THE TRIP). And who is that at the start of the episode? Is that Dr. Emmett Brown? Why, yes! We think it is!

THE EQUALIZER and THE ZERO THEOREM on Episode #11

Denzel Washington

Hey, peeps! It’s Friday and time to spoil the snot out of new releases! This week it’s Terry Gilliam’s regrettable THE ZERO THEOREM and the Dave-and-Kris-loved-it Denzel Washington kill-fest THE EQUALIZER. Plus, on this episode: TANGENTS. But it wouldn’t be Spoilerpiece without tangents, right?

TUSK, A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES, and THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU on Episode #10

TUSK

Big day on Spoilerpiece Theatre! Kris waxes animalistic about TUSK; Evan reveals that the animal he identifies with most is a turtle; Dave then brings up ENTOURAGE, which makes Kris nuts; Evan gives the deets on THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU; and Kris and Dave talk about the many finer and many lesser points of A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. This episode is brought to you by BIG-ASS TANGENTS: When you want to get somewhere…but not yet.

THE ONE I LOVE, THE LAST OF ROBIN HOOD, and THE CONGRESS on Episode #8

TheOneILove_still5_ElisabethMoss_MarkDuplass

It’s a goddamn bumper crop of movies on Spoilerpiece Theatre this week. We’ve got THE LAST OF ROBIN HOOD which only Kris has seen, THE CONGRESS, which Dave and Kris saw (and kind of wish they hadn’t), and Evan saw THE ONE I LOVE and delights in spoiling the hell out of it. In fact, this many be the first case of spoiling in history that got Dave and Kris to reeeeeally want to see a movie. There are also plenty of tangents and some anti-Connecticut sentiments throughout.

Luc Besson’s “Lucy” starring Scarlett Johansson: This week on “Spoilerpiece Theatre”

On Friday, July 25, 2014, we’ll be talking about Luc Besson’s Lucy. We’ll also be talking about — if Dave remembers to bring it up — the hashtag #whatifthepurgewasreal, the weird Twitter trend that popped up with the release of The Purge: Anarchy. See you Friday morning!
