THE INTERVIEW cancellation and THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES on Episode #23

Are they smiling now? Who the hell knows!

Are they smiling now? Who the hell knows!

Because we’ve never seen anything like this in our lives – “unprecedented,” as Kris says – we thought we’d talk about THE INTERVIEW and its cancelled release, and what the implications are for the film industry, and, at the risk of sounding hoity-toity, life in general. Plus, we all weigh in on the awfulness of the final chapter of Peter Jackson’s bloated Hobbit crapfest. There are lots of tangents, too, as Kris reveals his appreciation for THIS IS THE END a movie Dave can’t imagine anyone would ever like, and Evan clues us in as to why he pronounces Smaug the Dragon’s name the way he does.

TOP FIVE, EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, and Our Top Five Rappers on Episode #22

Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson in TOP FIVE

Chris Rock and Rosario Dawson in TOP FIVE

Sadly, Dave is away this week, which means we had to record at Evan’s and he had to edit, so hopefully we sound okay. And if we don’t, too bad! Anyway, Dede Crimmins joins us again as we talk about Chris Rock’s TOP FIVE and Ridley Scott’s EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS. We also talk about Cards Against Humanity’s Ten Days or Whatever of Kwanzaa, our top five rappers, Jean Claude Van Damme’s poetic turns of phrase, and films we watched at home before voting on our awards for BOFCA.

THE BABADOOK and UNDER THE SKIN on Episode #21

the-babadook

Hey-o! It’s THE BABADOOK on Episode #21. Like, for realz, this movie is scary as hell. It’s also awards-caliber excellent. We also get into UNDER THE SKIN because Evan saw it and it’s awards season, so it’s totes worth talking about. Plus, Dave pretends he’s Ed Bradley from 60 MINUTES while Kris regales us with his favorite tales about YTMND from the Internet of yore.

Horrible Bosses 2

Happy Thanksgiving! Before you head off to the movie theater after turkey, check out the gang’s thoughts on HORRIBLE BOSSES 2, Tommy Lee Jones’ THE HOMESMAN, and the goofiness of PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR. Evan, Kris, and Dave all offer thoughts on the reasoning behind the latest HORRIBLE BOSSES debacle, there’s a lengthy debate over the merits of  THE HOMESMAN, and the penguins? THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY – Part 1 and CALVARY on Episode #19

hunger-games-mockingjay-part-1

Can you say marketing ploy? That’s right! It’s our yap-fest about THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PART 1, a movie we can’t stop discussing even though we try to many times. Then we talk about CALVARY and wonder why Brendan Gleeson isn’t a star. But perhaps most strangely, Evan lets Dave stroll through his Tinder account while Kris seems aghast.

DUMB AND DUMBER TO and ROSEWATER on Episode #18

5701_FPT_00005R

It’s a mix of the highbrow and lowbrow this week as we talk about the complexities of Iran in Jon Stewart’s ROSEWATER, and the comedic atrocities of DUMB AND DUMBER TO, a 20-years-later sequel that no one wanted. Or if they DID want it, they wanted it 15 years ago. Plus, how many viewers will get that the “to” is misspelled on purpose?

INTERSTELLAR, BIG HERO 6, and (whoops) MORE HORROR on Episode #17

interstellar_a

We cover a lot of ground this week. Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR! BIG HERO 6! And Evan brings up that last week we forgot to talk about GHOULIES (which screened at the Halloween horror overnighter that our guest Deirdre Crimmins and Dave talked about). Plus, we talk about Robert Zemeckis and his crappy motion capture movies; Eddie Money songs; Evan cracks himself up; Kris mentions that he does research; and Dave tries to remember the theme song to the Saturday morning cartoon DROIDS.

NIGHTCRAWLER, HORNS, and HORROR on Episode #16

K72A5164.CR2

Evan couldn’t make the recording so Kris and Dave are joined by friend and fellow critic Deirdre Crimmins (check out her work on allthingshorror.com!). This week we yap a ton about horror movies (because this episode premieres on Halloween), and we also get into the excellent Jake Gyllenhaal flick NIGHTCRAWLER and Alexandre Aja’s HORNS. The horror movies we touch on include FRANKENSTEIN (1931), THE LOST BOYS, EVIL DEAD II, EATEN ALIVE, GHOULIES (which we forgot to mention), and THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, which is easily one of the worst movies to ever grace the silver screen.

After a weekend of horror, two tweets explain it all

Two-thirds of the Spoilerpiece Theatre podcast attended the 12-hour horror movie marathon at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Mass., over the weekend. The movies, in the order shown, were:

1. Frankenstein (1931);

2. The Lost Boys;

3. Evil Dead II;

4. Eaten Alive (shown under the title “Starlight Slaughter,” and one of the worst movies we’ve ever seen);

5. Ghoulies;

6: The Incredible Melting Man (in which a man melts for 84 minutes, and his name, “Steve,” is uttered approximately 450 times);

7. The Wicker Man.

It was a great time, and our good friend and fellow film critic Sam Cohen tweeted the following afterward:

JOHN WICK, BIRDMAN, AND THE BLUE ROOM on Episode #15

_1JW7056.NEF

This week we talk about Keanu Reeves’ old-guy-kicking-ass movie JOHN WICK, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s BIRDMAN, and the very French THE BLUE ROOM. Tangents this week include why trailers suck, the French as a people, the Byronic hero, and lots of other stuff. Plus, Dave sings “Two Heads Are Better Than One” for a half-chorus (it’s Evan’s fault), and Kris explains how John Wick (the character) comes to violence (short version: The bad guys came at him on the WRONG day).
