THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., PHOENIX, and STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON on Episode #57

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer on a scooter in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer during one of the best scenes in THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

Dave is back again on this week’s Spoilerpiece (which makes two weeks in a row)! The fellas talk about silly t-shirts they wish they could own, including one in particular that Kris wanted as a kid. Then the guys take on a bumper crop of movies. Kris and Evan are up first with their thoughts on Guy Ritchie’s hyper-styled adaptation of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E., which has a great performance by Armie Hammer and one of the worst car chases Kris has ever seen. Dave delivers praise for PHOENIX, while wondering what the plural of the word is (phoenices?). Once he’s done talking up the film’s perfectly composed photography, interesting post-World War II story, and its Hitchcock-ian flavor, Evan and Kris round things out with STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. Both of them discuss why they love the movie (because fuck the po-lice) and how its casting is fantastic.

FANTASTIC FOUR, SHAUN THE SHEEP, RICKI AND THE FLASH, and THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT on Episode #56

FANTASTIC FOUR poster

This poster is more exciting than the entire movie of FANTASTIC FOUR

On this week’s episode Kris shares his plans to weaponize peeing babies with Dave and Evan, before Evan tears FANTASTIC FOUR a new one. The film is terrible in many ways, but Evan just can’t let go of one particularly obnoxious plot hole. After the three of them engage in some Tenacious D-inspired swearing, Dave talks about SHAUN THE SHEEP, a delightful movie that everyone should see. Kris then discusses how Meryl Streep’s Republican grocery store cashier safely rebels through rock music in the confusing RICKI AND THE FLASH. Somehow that leads to Dave and Evan singing about squirrels. Finally, Evan closes everything out with THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT, a picture that would work better as a documentary, rockumentary, or shockumentary than the flat, repetitive narrative that it is. For some reason all the roads lead back to urine and squirrels in this episode.

PIXELS, SOUTHPAW, THE TRIBE, and INFINITELY POLAR BEAR on Episode #54

Michelle Monahan, Adam Sandler, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage in Pixels

How the fuck did Josh Gad and Peter Dinklage end up in PIXELS?

This week Dave tells everyone more about why he loves HIDING OUT with John Cryer and poses an interesting theory about Jim Carrey before Kris shares that he was wearing flannel before it was cool. Evan kept his promise to see THE TRIBE so he can’t wait to share his thoughts about how fucked up its graphic scenes of violence and sex are. Then he tries to summarize the plot for PIXELS, while explaining how terrible it is to Dave and Kris. Thankfully Kris shifts momentum to discuss SOUTHPAW, which is about a boxer who isn’t a southpaw, but he does have his own entourage. Dave wraps up the episode by reviewing INFINITELY POLAR BEAR, a film he enjoyed where Mark Ruffalo plays the kind of bipolar father who tells rivers to go fuck themselves.

STRANGERLAND, MINIONS, MR. HOLMES, and A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE on Episode #52

Ian McKellen in Mr. Holmes

Contrary to Dave’s opinion, Sherlock Holmes (Sir Ian McKellen) is NOT Scottish in MR. HOLMES.

This week Spoilerpiece turns 1 year old AND Dave is back! The guys talk about whether it’s okay for him to make “Your Mom Jokes” now that he is a dad. Then Dave jumps into STRANGERLAND, which he dubs “the cinematic equivalent to spit up.” He jokes about how acting skills don’t run in the Fiennes family and wonders how Nicole Kidman is still making movies considering she hasn’t had a good one since 2004’s BIRTH. Dave did see something good though: A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH RELFECTING ON EXISTENCE, which has a terrible title but a really interesting premise. Evan covers MINIONS, a film that stars characters who work better in small doses. Finally Kris wraps up the show by reviewing MR. HOLMES, where an elderly Sherlock Holmes has a housekeeper that’s definitely NOT Scottish and he flashes back without acid. Stick around after the closing music for an added bonus.

ALOHA, SPY, and KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK on Episode #47

Screen Shot 2015-06-07 at 10.50.02 AMBefore he escapes Boston for NYC, Sam Cohen makes his first ever podcast appearance as the special guest on this week’s episode. Being the yougin’ that he is, Sam shares his experience watching BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA for the first time. The guys discuss its impending remake along while comparing Kurt Russell and The Rock. Then Sam tells Kris and Evan about Cameron Crowe’s degeneration as a filmmaker with his nonsensical movie ALOHA. None of them know what a gate opening ceremony is or how music by David Bowie can blow up a satellite, but apparently both are important plot elements. Thankfully Kris and Sam saw SPY, which pleasantly surprised both of them. After they tell Evan all about why he should see it, he and Sam finish up the show by talking about KURT COBAIN: MONTAGE OF HECK. Want to find out why the documentary gave Evan all the feels? Then tune in.

HOT PURSUIT, FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD, and PLAYING IT COOL on Episode #43

Sophia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon covered in

Sophia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon covered in “flour” aka cocaine in HOT PURSUIT

This week Kris starts off by recommending a title for Dave’s autobiography. Dave gets a good laugh out of that before explaining why he doesn’t watch bad ’80s John Travolta movies (except URBAN COWBOY) and why Debra Winger is one of his least favorite onscreen presences. After that he talks about how HOT PURSUIT tries to subvert buddy comedy cliches and fails. In the process, Kris describes how he got accidentally hooked on THE NEW GIRL. Then he and Evan talk about the layers and complexity in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD that make it such an enjoyable film. Finally, Dave wraps things up with his take on PLAYING IT COOL, a romantic comedy which has some decent moments, but mostly gets demerits from him for “being dumb as shit.”

Adam Sandler, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, EX MACHINA, and IFFBoston on Episode #42

Poster for Avengers: Age of Ultron

This is an accurate representation of the number of enemies the Avengers fight in AGE OF ULTRON

This week the guys all agree that they would be better off never seeing another Adam Sandler movie after discussing Dave’s op ed on Sandler’s project THE RIDICULOUS 6. Then they move on to talking about AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which Evan forgets to refer to by its full name. Dave likes the film a lot, but Evan and Kris have some issues with it. Next, Dave fills them in on Alex Garland’s EX MACHINA, leading Kris to wonder aloud “Why does a robot have a butt?” No one really has a good answer other than sexism. Finally, Kris wraps up by talking about stuff he caught at IFFBoston like WELCOME TO LEITH, CALL ME LUCKY, and THE TRIBE. One of these films almost made Kris lose his burrito dinner because it was “astounding, gripping, and holy shit disturbing.” Tune in to find out which one it is.

THE WATER DIVINER, LITTLE BOY, THE AGE OF ADALINE, and fan mail on Episode #41

Jakob Salvati in LITTLE BOY

Evan’s face while he watched the nuclear bomb LITTLE BOY

It’s fan mail day on Spoilerpiece Theatre. Dave reads a letter his editors received at the Santa Fe Reporter, and the writer, in admonishing Dave for using foul language, swears more than Dave ever does in print. Evan rips LITTLE BOY a new one, Kris gets into history with his review of Russell Crowe’s THE WATER DIVINER (and Evan and Dave do a lot of talking with Australian accents), and Dave is on board with THE AGE OF ADALINE’s magical realism. Please forgive the audio problem we had at the end of the recording. One of the mic cords went dead and a few of Kris’ final thoughts are at low volume; it’ll be fixed by the next episode.

The STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer, UNFRIENDED (HORROR!), and TRUE STORY on Episode #40

Jonah Hill in TRUE STORY

Jonah Hill pretty much has this dumb expression on his face the whole time in TRUE STORY

It’s a tangent kinda night at Spoilerpiece! We open with a lengthy discussion of the new STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS trailer. Evan and Kris are on board. Dave has doubts (to say the least). Kris points out that Evan and Dave are the kinds of guys who would sit in the back of the classroom, pass notes, and crack jokes. There’s a lot of singing in this episode, and then the guys get to TRUE STORY, the not-great movie starring Jonah Hill and James Franco. Finally, it’s onto HORROR! Kris and Dave saw UNFRIENDED, and it’s way more fun than it should be.

THE LONGEST RIDE (Nicholas Sparks), GOING CLEAR (Scientology!), and MERCHANTS OF DOUBT on Episode #39

Ridiculously Good Looking - Scott Eastwood in THE LONGEST RIDE

Ridiculously Good Looking – Scott Eastwood in THE LONGEST RIDE

“AM I ACTING IRRATIONALLY?” shouts Dave after a long anti-Nicholas Sparks rant. It’s an epic episode this week, kids. Kris admits he didn’t turn to look at the people behind him at the screening of the Sparks adaptation THE LONGEST RIDE because “I didn’t want them to get mad in my face.” Evan and Dave dip in Scientological waters when they discuss GOING CLEAR, and Dave wraps it up with MERCHANTS OF DOUBT, the documentary about climate change deniers. There are a million tangents this week, including a lengthy discussion of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s acting choices, HOT FUZZ, and why SPACED wouldn’t work in the U.S.
