THE PRINCESS, THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER, THE SUMMONED, and ON THE 3RD DAY on Episode #417

RUBIKON, SPIDERHEAD, and THE FORGIVEN on Episode #416

After that, we review Magdalena Lauritsch’s RUBIKON (39:42), a disappointingly derivative sci-fi film about three astronauts caught in a moral dilemma after a climate disaster strikes Earth. This week, we welcome our old friend Sam Cohen back on the show! Things kick off with two Crewinds: NORTH BY NORTHWEST (4:09) and CITIZEN KANE (7:23), both of which Evan saw on Filmstruck. If you have classic films that have been on your watchlist for years, FilmStruck is here to help (not a sponsored message, we just dig the service). Next up, Kris (pardon his scratchy post-illness voice) catches up with an old Soviet classic WALKING THE STREETS OF MOSCOW (12:30), a film by Georgiy Daneliya that brings the heart and soul of the French New Wave to 1960s Russia. Sam then talks BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (21:16), bad times that were unfortunately had by the audience as well. Kris gets everyone excited for A STAR IS BORN (31:41) which is going to win a whole bunch of Oscars and that’s okay. Evan then finishes things off with THE SISTERS BROTHERS (44:20), the latest stark, brutal Western about the lawlessness of the early American Frontier.

This week starts with Dave’s recap of the all-night Halloween Marathon at Brookline’s Coolidge Corner Theatre (2:30) featuring some of the best in classic zombie flicks. Next up, Kris recounts his spooky double feature, LET’S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH and MESSIAH OF EVIL (16:09), both of which are great slices in 1970s weirdness. Dave runs us through THE KILLING OF A SACRED DEER (28:32) and does not buy into the hype. Dave and Evan team up for LBJ (34:39), the latest take on the president with a complicated legacy. Last up, all three talk about the surprisingly delightful THOR: RAGNAROK (44:37) from Taika Waititi.

DETROIT, SHINING THROUGH, and THOR on Episode #160

This week Dave admits why he’s way too excited about his car getting detailed, before Kris declares that his beard might be magical. Prior to the week’s main event, the guys serve up a heaping helping of recaps. Evan leads off with a segment of “Crewind,” where he offers his take on PHOENIX (6:06), a film that Dave spoilerpieced many moons ago. After he talks about his reaction to the German film’s incredible ending, he tackles SHINING THROUGH (10:35), the Melanie Griffith picture where she’s a sharp half-Jewish woman who spies on the Germans with Michael Douglas during World War II. Then Dave takes over with “Riedel’s Recaps” of I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE (20:43), a movie he liked more than Evan, who spoilerpieced it earlier this year, and THOR (24:41), which he was not impressed by. Finally, all three gents delve into DETROIT (34:01), Kathryn Bigelow’s chronicle of the brutality and murder at the Algiers Motel during the 1967 Detroit riot. In their commentary, the guys address criticisms leveled by other critics that the film is exploitative, while also sharing their personal reactions to it.

We talk about what works and what doesn’t in the new GHOSTBUSTERS.

This week Kris shares his revolutionary idea for a new mobile game before he and Evan jump right into the new GHOSTBUSTERS (at 3:24). Kris tends to be more negative about it, but Evan also reveals some aspects that don’t work for him. They try to take time to talk about the things in it they enjoy though, like the gadgets, the camaraderie between the characters and individually hilarious players like Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. After covering this film about women made by a man, Kris transitions into commentary on CHEVALIER (at 25:52), a Greek movie about men made by a woman. He describes why this “bone dry” comedy is a metaphorical dick joke and tells Evan and Dave why they absolutely need to see it. Next up is Dave to discuss TONY ROBBINS: I’M NOT YOUR GURU (at 35:00), a Netflix documentary directed by Joe Berlinger. Dave describes why it’s a concert movie, while sharing insights from his recent interview with Berlinger. Finally, Evan closes with THE INFILTRATOR (at 49:38), a tense undercover caper with Bryan Cranston. He catches Kris and Dave’s interest with his commentary on how the cops are always barely one step ahead of the criminals they’re chasing in the picture.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA and the 2015 BOFCA Awards on Episode #74

Dave is back from sick leave to share his unique take on a classic lullaby. Then Evan and Kris jump into reviewing Ron Howard’s IN THE HEART OF THE SEA, or IN THE FART OF THE SEA, as Dave calls it. The film stars the Greater Hemsworth (Chris) and Brendan Gleeson, but not Dave’s favorite actor Ray Winstone. It’s a movie about a sperm whale that kills seamen, and yes the guys milk that fact for all the laughs it’s worth. They also don’t shy away from making CABIN BOY references whenever possible. Probably the biggest surprise is how much Evan and Kris disagree about it. Their conversation veers into a tangent about Ron Howard films, before all three guys get into this year’s Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) awards. The three of them share their top 10 lists, and delve into some of the categories where they had completely different items in their ballots like Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary. Highlights include PEACE OFFICER, FINDERS KEEPERS, STRAY DOG, and JAFAR PANAHI’S TAXI. Before they sign off, the guys have a few words of appreciation for the marketers giving BOFCA’s awards some attention, and a few choice words for the organization’s critics.

Adam Sandler, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, EX MACHINA, and IFFBoston on Episode #42

This week the guys all agree that they would be better off never seeing another Adam Sandler movie after discussing Dave’s op ed on Sandler’s project THE RIDICULOUS 6. Then they move on to talking about AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, which Evan forgets to refer to by its full name. Dave likes the film a lot, but Evan and Kris have some issues with it. Next, Dave fills them in on Alex Garland’s EX MACHINA, leading Kris to wonder aloud “Why does a robot have a butt?” No one really has a good answer other than sexism. Finally, Kris wraps up by talking about stuff he caught at IFFBoston like WELCOME TO LEITH, CALL ME LUCKY, and THE TRIBE. One of these films almost made Kris lose his burrito dinner because it was “astounding, gripping, and holy shit disturbing.” Tune in to find out which one it is.

Well, it finally happened. A movie made Evan really, really angry. And the thing that made him angry is a movie he otherwise liked. That’s right, gang! It’s Michael Mann’s BLACKHAT (which Dave didn’t know was Michael Mann until five minutes before the screening), and AMERICAN SNIPER. Plus, Kris has the best line of the night in his one-sentence description of Chris Hemsworth’s character in BLACKHAT. Anyway, there are plentiful tangents, and we also wanted to say thank you for listening! Last week was our most downloaded yet.
