POKEMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU and THE WHITE CROW on Episode #252

Detective Pikachu looking cute and cuddly
Is Detective Pikachu cute? Yes. Is he funny? Hell no.

This week Dave shares why he’s training for the New York Marathon and details his preparations for the big race. Next Evan shares his thoughts on THE INTRUDER (4:00), which he and Shauna watched based on Kris’s recommendation. After they delve into nuances and plot holes from the movie, Dave jumps in to review THE WHITE CROW (13:05), a Ralph Fiennes film based on a true story he didn’t realize that he knew until halfway through. Following a JOHN WICK tangent, Kris and Evan tackle POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (23:05) aka POKÉMON DETECTIVE, a movie neither thinks is good, but one of them found more egregious. Tune in to find out who and to hear Evan educate Dave and Kris about Pokémon.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, DEADPOOL 2, DISOBEDIENCE, and GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT on Episode #201

Alden Ehrenreich in Solo: A Star Wars Story looking skeptically at Woody Harrelson while Chewbacca stands in the background looking the same way with his head tilted.

As we suspected Alden Ehrenreich makes for a terrible Han Solo in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

Here we are at episode 201, kids! We made it! Evan kicks the show off with a Crewind of GENTLEMAN’S AGREEMENT (3:04), a 1947 film about anti-Semitism starring Gregory Peck. Kris follows up with DEADPOOL 2 (11:14), a movie that Kris feels differently about from most critics. Then Dave and Evan go into DISOBEDIENCE (26:19), director Sebastian Lelio’s English-language debut starring Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola, about, as New Order might say, a bizarre love triangle. Finally, Evan and Dave get into SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY (36:07). Who liked it? Who didn’t? By the way, there are tangents aplenty in this episode.

THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD, BREAKER MORANT, THE B-SIDE: ELSA DORFMAN’S PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY, CROSSING DELANCEY, and AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD on Episode #162

Samuel L. Jackson pointing a gun at Ryan Reynolds in THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD.

Samuel L. Jackson pissing Ryan Reynolds off in THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD.

Dave met Daniel from France! He was in town on vacation and they bumped into each other at the Coolidge Corner in Brookline. Dave tells that story, and then the guys have a few things to say about Charlottesville, Va., and then they get into the movies. Evan starts things off with THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD (7:53), a movie he describes as “Not as bad as I thought it would be.” The guys head down under to BREAKER MORANT at 20:29, and Dave spends waaaaay too much time talking with a terrible Oz accent. Kris covers Errol Morris’ THE B-SIDE: ELSA DORFMAN’S PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY starting at 30:27. Evan takes they guys on a stroll down Amnesia Lane to CROSSING DELANCEY at 38:15, which is a delightfully sweet romantic comedy from the late 1980s. Finally, Kris and Dave cover Werner Herzog’s AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD at 48:00, which screened on Monday, August 14 in 35mm. Everyone should have access to rep theaters like the Coolidge.

LIFE and WILSON on Episode #141

Jake Gyllenhaal being very un-Jake Gyllenhall in LIFE.

Jake Gyllenhaal being very un-Jake Gyllenhall in LIFE.

This week the guys attempt to answer the age old question, “Who’s the luckiest person in show business?” with mixed results. Each of them have some catching up to do on movies that they’ve seen, so they do some quick recaps (starting at 4:26) before they dive into these week’s movies. Kris shares short takes on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and PERSONAL SHOPPER, prior to Evan offering brief thoughts on 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE, and Dave revealing what he took away from the rest of OJ: MADE IN AMERICA. After that Kris and Evan discuss WILSON (at 19:32), a film based on a Daniel Clowes graphic novel, where Woody Harrelson plays a guy walking through life telling everyone bullshit and acting like an asshole. Then all three guys discuss the sci-fi horror movie LIFE (at 41:11) which has great actors giving mediocre performances. They compare various parts to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, and ALIEN, however they describe why it gets dumber the more you think about it.

DEADPOOL, ZOOLANDER 2, SOUTHBOUND, and THE CANAL on Episode #83

Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds is as perfect for Deadpool as Robert Downey Jr. is for Tony Stark.

This week Kris starts out by asking Dave an important question about how he intends to handle swearing around Baby Henry as he gets closer to actually understanding bad words. Then Evan laments how bad comedy sequels are when he discusses ZOOLANDER 2. The movie’s jokes about millennials suck and it has dumb mythology, but as a great Kiefer Sutherland, which leads to a Kiefer tangent before Kris and Evan tackle DEADPOOL. Friend of the podcast Sam Cohen didn’t care for it, so Evan and Kris start their review of this very funny fourth-wall breaking comic book film by addressing Sam’s issues. Following a GAME OF THRONES tangent, Kris spoilerpieces THE CANAL, an excellent Irish horror flick that he says is creepy, scary, and keeps you guessing. Evan wraps up by talking about horror as well with SOUTHBOUND, a horror anthology that’s freaky, well-put together, and very cohesive. And in case you missed it in the last episode, we are now on Stitcher, so be sure to subscribe to us there if you don’t have iTunes!

FURIOUS 7, WOMAN IN GOLD, and (briefly) DER SAMURAI on Episode #38

The cast of FURIOUS 7 strutting their stuff

We Make This Look Good – The cast of FURIOUS 7 strutting their stuff

Vin Diesel said FURIOUS 7 should win Best Picture if the Oscars want to be relevant. Hey, NOTHING could make the Oscars relevant, not even THIS KICK-ASS PIECE OF AWESOME MOVIE. Holy crap, is it amazing. It’s not FAST & FURIOUS 6, but it’s close. Also on the show, Dave shows off his love for the German accent when Evan talks about WOMAN IN GOLD, and Kris regales us with stories of DER SAMURAI and Passover cake. Plus, there’s a Steve Martin moment or two at the top.
